Title: Could SR ever get shutdown?
Post by: rodneeyy on March 30, 2013, 01:11 pm
So could silkroad sever be shutdown and removed?
By the FBI or whatever.

It's theoretically possible, but it requires a lot of resources and time. And if they did, new sites would be ready to take over. The war on drugs is futile.

Short answer: No

This was answered in another thread. With all the proxy servers and backup addresses I find it very unlikely that will ever happen. It might get shut down for a few hours, but it'll be right back up ready to rock and roll 8) I wouldn't worry about it too much, buddy.

The great thing about SR and its decentralization is that you can only really target one person at a time and no one is connected with SR. It would take too long and far too many resources to take down all of SR. You can take one vendor out every once in a while. (SDM.. I feel he kinda got sloppy by accepting cash for btc in mail) but not the consumer and not even close to the whole pie.

Although it is unlikely Silk Road will be stopped so early, it should be noted that, as we learn new things every day to stay hidden, so do police learn new tricks every day to find us . Complacency is the enemy of security. Act each day as if you expect a knock at the door. Stay smart, stay safe and plan ahead.

biggest danger is that dpr simply shuts down because he is stinking rich

Of course it could. You'd be incredibly naive to think otherwise.

Not sure if it would actually be enacted if the site was shut down, but you may not have noticed you can nominate in account settings a "Backup bitcoin address"   help tab says: "if for some reason this site has to be shut down unexpectedly, the available bitcoins in your account will be sent here. "
Somehow, I don't think they would be, but it can't hurt to put my address in there.  When I get them I'll forward them onto you.

SR makes the war on drugs look like a punk bitch

No way! not unless it starts to interefere with their main agenda...
a few drugs here and there isnt a big deal.

Most governments are far too worried about taking away guns than drugs these days anyway

Essentially yes, they could arrest the people behind SR and cut the head off of the whole thing. Something else will always pop up though, but the odds of getting shut down are slim to none.

I don't think SR will get shutdown any time soon. It's just not within an authority's power to do that.

I've always kind of thought that if drugs were legal, then dealers as we know them would be out of a job :P

Presumably one day DPR will pull the biggest heist in bitcoin history, shutdown the site and run off with all the funds. However right now SilkRoad is a huge cash cow - why kill it off just yet?

[Even if DPR would never do this, a rational user of the site *must* assume he will because economically it makes sense for him to do so - but only when he wants to retire or if the site stops making money].

The good news for users is that it's very easy to setup an alternative site. So if/when SR gets shut down, other alternatives will spring up to take its place.

The biggest threat to SR is it's members.

Individual countries could block TOR by using deep packet inspection.

How so? Vendors rolling over? Or just loss of ethical standards?

Isn't this the fucking truth for crying out loud...

In response to the OP, as long as someone like the group Anonymous can hack into countries private servers and have the power to do the things they can, then YES there is someone out there who does indeed possess the power to shut down or substantially damage a site like this.

I'm not implying that certain someone would want to, as a matter of fact they would probably be with SR not against.

But, clearly this hypothetical person I am talking about would rather use his powers for something other than helping LE or we would be shut down already.

@alldaylong

The members are a threat in many ways.

Bad publicity...
Servers Overload (not the biggest problem)...
They can expose methods to LE when they get caught...
Scammers...

The list goes on for days man

Add to that this naive attitude that some people seem to have about SR being completely untouchable. Much of it comes from these kids who get so excited about a place like this that they just don't know how to contain themselves. Part of it is immaturity, part is just total naivety and a lack of understanding. They get a package or two and then tell everybody who will listen all about how they order drugs off the internet. People need to realize that this isn't fucking Amazon or eBay. It's serious business and needs to be treated as such.

Yeah it would definitely get out of hand very fast with youth, especially the ones with rich parents that are never home and don't give a fuck about what their asswad kid is doing...

Their dad is at the country club cheating on his wife with the secretary and little does he know his house is getting raided, his sons going to prison for a very long time, and his marrige will fall apart...

Fuck I am faced as fuck right now.

I imagine its not a matter of getting shutdown. However many of the things sold on SR will at some point become legal/less controlled cutting down on traffic here. Or it may just evolve into something else.
